2011 Golden Rose Race Results
Smart Missile was unlucky to come second to Manawanui in the 2011 Golden Rose after interference at the 600m mark from Foxwedge, who also severely checked other on-course favourite Helmet. This resulted in jockey James McDonald getting a seven-meeting suspension for hindering the chances of Smart Missile and Helmet from winning the Golden Rose. Foxwedge finished the race 3rd, but a protest from jockey Kerrin McEvoy, the jockey of Helmet, was succesful.
Trainer of Smart Missile, Anthony Cummings was dissapointed his horse didn’t come away with the win, reflecting after the match:
“When everything became untidy at the start, Bossy (jockey Glen Boss) changed his mind,”…
“We had planned to be a lot more forward than where we ended up.
“He’s run the best sectional (600 metres), he’s run the best race but the best ride won the day.”
Cummings did manage to find some solace in the loss, now that he’s seen Smart Missile competitive over 1200m for the first time.
“At least on that run today we know 1400 (metres) and a mile (1600m) won’t be an issue”
“His first run in Melbourne will either be the Guineas Prelude or the Rupert Clarke Stakes and we’ll work it out from there.
