2013 AFL Grand Final Betting Odds - Hawthorn vs Fremantle

Hawthorn take on Fremantle this weekend. It will be Freo’s first grand final appearance, coached by Ross Lyon they look to be a formiddable opponent for the Hawks who just squeezed a victory against their rivals Geelong. This was the first time that Hawthorn managed to beat Geelong since the Grand Final in 2008, when the Cats were short favourites, having been the best team all season. For fans of Hawthorn, they understand exactly what it feels like to be almost assured of a win by the bookies, yet to get clearly beaten as this will be fresh in the players and fans minds alike from last year, when the Sydney Swans beat the heavily favoured Hawthorn team due to great defensive pressure.

Strong defense is one thing both Fremantle and Sydney have in common, they are both excellent at stoppages with great rucks and inside midfielders to get the clearances and they know how to lock down a game, put pressure on the ball carrier and force errors. Hawthorn’s game plan is more exciting to watch, more offensive but also dangerous when placed under high pressure. Freo showed an enormous amount of pressure all over the ground last week to defeat Geelong in the Preliminary Final, and I would expect them to be just as ferocious in the 2013 Grand Final.

I think the main question everyone who’s interested in AFL football is asking at the moment is can Fremantle win their very first AFL Premiership? I think they can if they play as well as they did last week. Their defensive game style can smother Hawthorn’s ability to attack, just as they did to Geelong a week ago.

Last year Hawthorn were unable to overcome a brilliant defensive side. Will the favoured Hawks’ offense be good enough in a Grand Final against a side whose defense is as solid as a rock, maybe even better than Sydney’s last year? Or can Hawthorn raise up the Premiership Cup for the 11th time with their star studded forward line and a game plan which revolves around precise kicking, controlling the tempo of the game and relentless attacking with stars all over the ground.

Fremantle are a reasonably young, extremely talented and tall side. Hawthorn have famously failed against tall forwards in previous years, however with the addition of Brian Lake at Full Back, the continued excellence of Josh Gibson and Ben Stratton providing support when it’s needed and the fact that Luke Hodge is free of any major injuries, allowing him to take control of the back line, I think we’re going to witness a very exciting game which will be very close and these two worthy competitors will make a great spectacle for hardened fans of AFL and those who’ve never heard of Australian Rules Football before.
