Tips for the Anzac Day Match, Collingwood V Essendon

The stage is set for another great game of AFL Football on Anzac Day at the MCG on Thursday afternoon. Both teams are playing good, attacking football and all signs point to what should be a close, tough and entertaining match.

The Bombers are sitting on top of the ladder with 4 wins from as many matches after a perfect start to the year. They’ve started season 2013 like a house on fire, reminiscent of their blistering start to the season last year and they’ve done it under enormous pressure from the media.

However, Essendon are facing some injury concerns heading into this match which coupled with some underdone players returning, could make it extremely difficult for them to win.

The Pies have only dropped the 1 game earlier in the year, which was to premiership favourites Hawthorn. Apart from that blemish, they have looked their attacking best this year. Travis Cloke has no contract issues to worry about and looks to be in great form after kicking 7 goals against Richmond last week, a personal best. Their star studded midfield, lead by Dane Swan and Scott Pendlebury is a force to be reckoned with.
The Bombers have a decent young midfield as well, lead by captain and Brownlow Medal winner Jobe Watson, former Saint Brendon Goddard, Brent Stanton who’s having another fine year and the younger players such as Ben Howlett and Dyson Heppell spending more time running through the middle of the ground are getting better every week.

I’m tipping the Pies to win this one but I believe it will be a lot closer than many people think. My tip is for Collingwood to win by 1-39 points, paying $2.20 with LuxBet, who are also offering the best straight win odds for Collingwood at $1.65.

This year there’s a second match on Anzac Day with the Saints taking on the Swans, fittingly, in Wellington, New Zealand. This will be the first time an AFL game has been played for premiership points outside of Australia. The Swans should have the Saints covered in this one, but there’s definitely no home ground advantage for either side. The stadium looks like it allows a lot of wind through and the forecasted weather may make this game a wet and windy affair. In these games, anything can happen so I wouldn’t completely write off the Saints but their opponents are a much stronger side and should prevail.
