My Tips for the 2014 Melbourne Cup Winner

It’s always hard to pick the winner of the Melbourne Cup when you could make a strong case for the majority of the field, and the others are still not without a chance to win the race under the right conditions, or maybe with a little bit of luck. I said before the Caulfield Cup that Admire Rakti would be a good choice for the Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup Double and my opinion hasn’t changed.

Top weight, Admire Rakti, another Japanese import is a proven stayer and finished 4th in last years Japan Cup. Probably more suited to the Melbourne Cup, but is not without a chance here and could even make for a decent Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double choice.

The classy Japanese import has every chance of being the first winner of both races, or “Cups Double” since Ethereal in 2001.

One of the main chances from New Zealand has to be Lucia Valentina who also had a great run in the Caulfield Cup and is only carring 53 kilo’s, drew a great barrier and has McEvoy on board. Mutual Regard is a proven stayer with Oliver on board, never underestimate the importance of having a good jockey. Bottom weight Signoff is carrying only 51 kilo’s and ran brilliantly last start to win the Lexus Stakes to earn a spot in the final Melbourne Cup field.

My biggest tip is to have fun, bet only what you can afford to lose and enjoy the race for what it is, a gathering of some of the world’s best long distance thoroughbred race horses, and of course, an excuse to have a day off work and drinking a few cold beverages if that’s your thing.
