Alex Leapai will become the first Australian heavyweight boxer in over 100 years to win a world title if he can defeat Wladimir Klitschko on the 26th of April, 2014 (7:00am on the 27th of April Australian Eastern Standard Time) at König-Pilsener-Arena in Oberhausen, Germany. He will also become $6 million richer should he win.

However, the odds are stacked against the delivery driver from Brisbane and online bookmakers are giving him very little chance to win the fight against the current world heavyweight champion, Ukraine’s “Dr. Steelhammer” Wladimir Klitschko. Klitschko currently holds the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring heavyweight boxing titles and will be no easy beat.

The Samoan born Australian boxer, nicknamed “The Lionheart” has enough power in both hands to knock out the Ukrainian, but he is 15cm shorter and gives up 16cm reach to the Ukrainian. Will he be able to penetrate the defenses of the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion of the world? Sometimes being the underdog helps because you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. There is also a chance that the current crisis in the Ukrainian’s home country could be a distraction for Klitschko, who now lives in the United States.

Alex Leapai was given no chance by the bookies in his last fight against Russian born Denis Boytsov either, however Leapai ended up dominating the 10 round fight and winning by unanimous points decision, knocking down the Russian on a number of occasions. That remarkable win was what gave Leapai the chance to fight against Wladimir Klitschko, I’m sure all Australian boxing fans will be watching this boxing match with great interest.

The fight will not be easy, Wladimir Klitschko has won his last 19 fights and it’s been over 10 years since he has lost in the ring. It’s important to note that thanks to Leapai’s sponsor Oxmar Properties, the humble delivery driver from Queensland will be able to train full time for the first time in his career, 3 times a day instead of just the 2 hours a day he was training before getting this shot at a world title.

The main thing I’m focusing on is being fit and strong for this fight, just getting the right sparring partners too.

Good Luck Alex, from all of us in Australia, Samoa and New Zealand. Even if you don’t win the fight, you’ve already achieved a great deal for someone who’s had to overcome a lot of obstacles along the way.
