Tips for the 2007 Melbourne Cup
Vlad Duric riding Master O’reilly certainly looks hard to beat, but there are a few others that I think have a fine chance of taking out this years cup.
- Purple Moon - with veteran jockey Damien Oliver on board has a very strong chance.
- Zipping - has decent wet weather form and has been looking in nice touch of late
- Mahler - with the bottom weight and a decent barrier, as well as a slow track win
- Sirmione - you can never underestimate Bart Cummings, could win the double like Rogan Josh

Bet on the 2007 Golden Slipper
A Super weekend of Racing kicks off on Friday with the running of the Listed Wagga Gold Cup over 2000m while Harness Racing at Moonee Valley features the running of the $20,000 Cinderella Stakes as the Mares Triple Crown gets underway with Kiwi mare Molly Darling the one to beat.
Racing at the Gold Coast on Saturday provides the highlight with the Prime Minister’s Cup meeting. The major race on the card is the $300,000 G2 Norco Pauls Milk WFA Hollindale Stakes over 1800m with Australian Cup winner Roman Arch sure to appreciate the drop in class on his last couple.
Super Sunday at Morphetville will see the running of the SA Derby and the Goodwood Handicap. The Leon McDonald trained Gallant Guru looks capable of posting a hometown win. Grinding home at his last couple he has been looking for the Derby trip while the much travelled Testafiable for trainer Peter Moody looms as hardest to beat.
The Goodwood Handicap is as open as the Sydney heads with a host of chances. Plenty of value if you can find the winner of this race with Royal Ida for trainer Michael O’Leary the early favourite.
Don’t forget the Asian Mile Challenge continues on Sunday with the running of the third leg of the Challenge, The Champions Mile at Sha Tin.
The racing spotlight falls on Rosehill tomorrow when the STC Golden Slipper carnival gets underway with the running of six Group races including the Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic for fillies and mares and the $400,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes. The Golden Slipper picture will also become a little clearer with Magic Millions winner Mirror Mirror stepping out in the $300,000 Group 2 Reisling Stakes (Race 3). She will have to contend with the David Hayes trained race favourite Miss Finland as she chases a birth in the $3 million Golden Slipper. Miss Finland is currently 8.50 in the Golden Slipper Future betting on IAS Bet, while Mirror Mirror is 10.00.
Derby hopefuls line up in the fourth on the card, the $140,000 Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes. The Greg Eurell trained Cadbury Guineas winner Apache Cat looms as the one to beat. Track conditions look set to suit as he takes on Racing To Win, the unbeaten Octagonal gelding Wasp and the Kiwi invader Darci Brahma in yet another great betting race.
The 400,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes is another great betting affair with AJC Derby winner Eremein stepping up to a suitable trip. IAS Bet has Eremein as the 3.00 race favorite in the 6th race on the Rosehill card. Victorian visitor Our Smoking Joe comes right into this as second favourite (opening at 4.50 on IAS bet), with his wet track form simply sensational.
The Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic for fillies and mares (Race 7) sees smart youngsters Mnemosyne and Regal Cheer clash again. Overnight rain has the track rating at a slow 6, giving Anthony Cummings hope of securing a start with the first emergency Ballybleue.
It should be another good weekend of racing, I think I’ll be backing Mnemosyne for a win, currently paying fixed price odds of $5 on IAS Bet.
There is another Super Saturday of racing at Flemington this weekend with three Group races including the $350,000 Group 2 Blamey Stakes, the $300,000 Group 2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes and the $150,000 Group 3 Queens Cup (2500m).
The Blamey Stakes, race 7 on the card, shapes up to be one of the most contentious races of the afternoon. Of particular interest to racing fans and punters is the return of shock Australian Cup winner Roman Arch in the Blamey Stakes on Saturday. The 50/1 winner last week opened at 7.00 in fixed odds betting at IASbet for the Blamey. The David Hayes trained Niconero, opened as the slight favourite in early fixed odds markets (6.00 on IASbet). Another intriguing prospect in the Blamey Stakes is Zipping. The Danehill gelding opened at 8.00 and shortened to 7.00. He has an impressive record with 7 wins and 2 third placings from his 10 lifetime starts, but does face his toughest test here.
Race 6 on the Flemington card, is the Sires Produce stakes. The smart two-year-old filly Nediym’s Glow has been declared an early scratching from the race. Her rival, the red-hot Lee Freedman stable runner Satin Robes, has shortened from 7.00 to 6.00 on IASbet. The all-conquering Hayes stable will supply the race favourite Ulfah. The market mover of the race is Deledio, who has shortened the most-from 21.00 to 15.00.
The last of Saturday’s feature races at Flemington sees the Danny O’Brien trained Adelaide Cup winner of 2005 Demerger step up to a suitable distance in the Queens Cup. The five-year-old mare will appreciate the drop back in class on her last start in the Australian Cup. Demerger is 4.00 at IASbet.
Click Here for the latest odds on the 2006 Golden Slipper, as the field is not yet finalized, there are some good odds to be had at the moment.
I Got Chills is currently the favourite, opening at $7, and now paying $5.50 for the win. Miss Finland has also been backed in, starting at $11 and a win will now return $8. Nadeem with it’s recent win by over 2 lengths at Caulfield has shortened considerably to $8, after betting opened at $21. Mirror Mirror, Wonderful World and Diego Garcia are all good value, paying over $10 each.
More to come once the field has been finalized.
There are some nice odds to be had on IAS Bet on the AAMI 2006 Blue Diamond Stakes, 1200m sprint. Due Sasso is the current favourite, paying $6. Close behind are Wonderful World and Miss Finland at $7. Then Satin Robes and Nediym’s Glow below the $10 mark. Snort, My Only Hope, Personify and Nadeem all have good value at less than $20.
With a few exceptions, these are much better odds than the TAB are offering, but remember - IASBet offers SuperPrice, which will gurantee you a higher dividend than the tote!
