AFL Finals Week 1 Betting Odds

The 2010 AFL Finals are here, and the first week looks set to have some great games of footy. The Cats vs the Saints should be a great game to watch, the Dockers putting up a full team this time to take the Hawks, Pies vs the out of form dogs should be a cracker and finally the Swans look to end the Blues season in Sydney, but not at the SCG. I’m looking forward to most of these games.

Round 22 AFL Betting Odds

We’ve made it to the very last round of the home and away season in 2010. The final 8 has been decided and there’s not a whole lot of value in the market this week. That said, I don’t think the bookies are showing Adelaide enough credit for nearly toppling the Pies last week away from home. Their recent form has been reasonable, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Saints rested a few of their stars for the finals. It will be interesting to see if the Crows can stop Brownlow Medal chance Brendon Goddard, and if they do, will they be able to contain Leigh Montagna as well? Sydney have shortened considerably amidst rumours of Jonathon Brown being a late withdrawal, I would expect them to beat the Lions even with Brown in the side. I think Melbourne are value against the Kangaroos, who now have nothing really to play for. If the Demons can find the form that we saw several weeks ago, I think they’re in with a good chance to finish off the season with a win.

Round 21 AFL Betting Odds

Last week was a great week for value, the two roughies I mentioned last came up, Sydney beating Freo and Adelaide getting over the Lions. Hawthorn also paid well and a stack of AFL multi’s paid off very well for me last week, I hope you had a win.

On to this week and it looks to be a week of the favourites. The three tough games to tip are all on Sunday between teams in the bottom half of the ladder. Port vs Melbourne, Bombers vs Lions and the Eagles vs the Kangaroos. None of these teams are realistically going to make the finals which is always a concern when having a punt. I’ll be looking for value elsewhere this week.

Round 20 AFL Betting Odds

The race to the top 8 is well and truly on, and some games this week will almost surely decide the fate of several teams.

There’s not much to say about the first game, as the odds suggest, Collingwood should beat Essendon quite comfortably. The next game, however is not so black and white. After Freo’s horrendous game last week, Sydney look to be overs here. If Sandilands comes in, the Dockers are a good chance to bounce back at home. Without him though, I wouldn’t be too sure. The Swans are in form and have a lot to play, I think there’s a bit of value in this one. Carlton are very short to beat the Tigers, which they should do if they can contain Coleman Medal chance Jack Riewoldt. The Tigers will be looking to bounce back from last weeks defeat and they can play some good footy, it really depends on which Carlton team shows up this week.

Going on recent form and playing for their interim coach, Port should defeat the Eagles at home. The Dogs vs Cats game should be a great match and I wouldn’t rule out the Dogs causing a bit of an upset. Brisbane vs Adelaide looks to be an interesting game. Neither teams have set the world on fire this year, although Adelaide have been a much better side recently and put up a decent show against the Bulldogs last week. Whether or not they travel well after a grueling game in poor conditions last week remains to be seen, however I like the Crows here. Hawthorn take on Melbourne at the ‘G and both teams must win if they’re to feature in September. At the start of the year you would have penciled this in as an easy win for the Hawks, but the young Demons have been playing some great attacking footy of late, and the Hawks have hit a flat spot after an amazing mid-season turn-around. I like the odds for Hawthorn here, they must win this one if they’re any reasonable chance to make the finals. In the last game of the round, the Saints should get over the Kangaroos without hitting 3rd gear.

Round 19 AFL Betting Odds

This looks like a really tough week for tipping with a lot of games that I think could go either way. That also means it’s a great week for finding some juicy odds!

The opener of the round is Essendon and Carlton. Both these teams have plenty of pace and I’m tipping this will be an exciting game worthy of Friday night. Essendon have had it over the Blues in recent times, winning the last 6 straight. The Blues are coming off an absolute thumping from the Pies, while Essendon, helped enormously by veteran Dustin Fletcher, simply destroyed the Saints last week. Hille and Ryder should dominate Hampson and Warnock/Jacobs in the Ruck and if the Bombers midfield is on song again, they should have the Blues covered. I think the bombers are overs and I’ll be getting on those odds.

I reckon the next few games could go either way. Freo should beat the Kangaroos, but they’re without three key players in Sandilands, Tarrant and Ballantyne, plus they’re away from home. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this was closer than many are predicting. Sydney have a great record against Hawthorn at home, and the Hawks looked desperately tired in the last half against Port Adelaide last week. I’m expecting this to be a close, low-scoring game which could play into Sydney’s hands and cause an upset.

The next two games are polar opposites. We have the battle for the wooden spoon as the 16th placed Eagles host the 15th placed Lions. West Coast aren’t the greatest side going around but they should beat an injury depleted Brisbane. Next, it’s the game of the round as 1st and 2nd on the ladder, Geelong and Collingwood, take each other on at the ‘G which could well be a grand final preview. Both teams are in great form and this should be a cracker. I think the Cats will get home in a close one but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Pies come out on top.

St Kilda should bounce back after last week and comfortably defeat Port at home, so long as there’s not too much figure skating going on at ol’ Etihad. Next up the Demons take on the Tigers. Melbourne are very short here and Richmond aren’t without a chance. I reckon this game will be much closer than the odds suggest and it may be worth putting the Tigers in a few multis. Both these teams look to be improving and I’m expecting a good game here.

Onto the last game of Round 19, and it’s hard to read Adelaide’s recent form. They looked to be flying after knocking off Geelong a few weeks back, but they backed that up with a poor showing in their SA derby, and last week their inaccuracy in poor conditions cost them the game against Richmond. The Bulldogs are absolutely flying, and it’s hard to see them getting beaten by the Crows, even though they do have a very good recent home record against them.

Barry Hall and Jack Riewoldt look to be the only two real contenders now, if Bazza can stay on the park, he looks set to become 2010’s leading goal kicker.

Below are the odds and my predictions at the start of the home and away season.

In order to get any kind of value from betting on the Coleman Medal, you really need to get your bets on before the season gets underway. My tip for 2010 is Hawthorn’s Lance Franklin, not just because I’m a Hawthorn supporter either.

Hawthorn will undoubtedly improve their delivery into the forward line this year with Sam Mitchell looking a million dollars, a fitter than ever Jordan Lewis running around & an injury-free Luke Hodge who looks set to spend a lot more time in the guts during 2010. The addition of Shaun Burgoyne to their list will help them win more clearances, and the young excitement machine Cyril Rioli is rumoured to spend some time in the midfield as well. According to this years AFL Prospectus, Champion Data general manager Tim Kelsey says Rioli is the best kick in the AFL. Finally, Buddy has lost a few kilo’s and had a much better pre-season. All signs point to yes for mine.

Fev deserves to be up there, however we’re yet to see if Brown and Fev can work together in the forward line. I don’t think Sydney are good enough for Bradshaw to win it, and their game style doesn’t generally involve lots of goals. For the roughies, I think Roughead (sic), Barry Hall (if he remembers this is football not boxing) and Riewoldt are good value.
