2009 AFL Round 8 Betting Odds & Tips

We’ve completed nearly a third of the home and away season for 2009 and we’ve just seen another week of major upsets, proving just how close most of the competition are this year. The two standout teams so far are certainly Geelong and St. Kilda. The amount of improvement in the Saints’ skills and gameplan is simply astounding, they seem a genuine competitor for the flag this year with a solid list that hasn’t been struck down by the injury curse and they’ve mastered the defensive side of their game, restricting Collingwood, Port Adelaide and Fremantle to 5 goals or less. Geelong on the other hand are doing exactly what they did last year, showing only glimpses of their best, but doing it exactly when it counts. Round 14 should be very entertaining.
On Friday night, we saw the Bombers smash the reigning premiers in one of the weeks major upsets. I was hoping the odds would be better for the Saints after this big win, unfortunately that isn’t the case. You’d be a brave man to tip against St. Kilda based on their current form. Fremantle continued their win streak against the Blues and North Melbourne shocked punters, and Port Adelaide by barely surviving another late game comeback which has made for some very exciting games of footy in the last couple of weeks.
On to this weeks tips and odds. Fremantle have a good home record against the Hawks, and Hawthorn are struggling with form and injuries, whereas the young Dockers are playing well, even away from home. The home ground advantage is what sways me here, I’m betting on Freo by less than 24 points. Collingwood can bounce back against Carlton at home after their big loss to St. Kilda, I will take those odds in what I expect to be a close game between these two rivals, another margin of < 24 for me.

Easy. Fremantle were a chance to beat the Hawks, and I went for what I thought was value in the Pies/Carlton game.
