AFL Brownlow Medal Betting Tips, Advice & Strategies
The Chas Brownlow Trophy, better known as the Brownlow Medal (and informally as "Charlie"), is awarded to the "best and fairest" player in the AFL during the regular season as determined by votes cast by the officiating umpires after each game. Itis the most prestigious award for individual players in the AFL. It is also widely acknowledged as the highest individual honour in the sport of Australian Rules Football. Some things to look out for when betting on the Brownlow Medal are listed below.
My advice for betting on the Brownlow
- Bet on players in teams that will feature prominently in the top 8.
I watched a lot of footy in 2008, and I was shocked at the Brownlow count when Dean Cox only polled 3 votes for the year when he was clearly BOG quite a few times throughout the season. Matthew Pavlich, on the other hand polled 17 votes from 19 games, even though Freo finished third last. To be fair, Fremantle didn't have many other stars in the side that influenced the games they won as much as Pav. Generally speaking though, the winner of the Charlie will be from a team in the top 8.
- Gamble on players that won't have too many votes taken away from them by their team-mates.
As Gary Ablett found out in '08. Joel Selwood, Joel Corey, Steve Johnson and Jimmy Bartel all polled more than 10 votes each last year for a total of 55 between them. Adam Cooney's top four brownlow polling team-mates (Daniel Cross, Matthew Boyd, Ryan Griffen and Jason Akermanis) polled 39 between them. Being able to identify stand-out players in average to good teams can be an absolute gold-mine in tipping both the Brownlow medalist winner, and the more exotic betting options such as win/place, top 5 and most votes from each team type betting.
- Get on midfielders that are likely to be under the tagging radar, or good enough to cope with opposition taggers.
Many people call the Brownlow the "Midfielders Medal", as those who play in the forward line, or in defense rarely get noticed as much as the major ball-winners. Lance Franklin is an exception to this rule, and players like Jonathon Brown, Nicj Riewoldt and Matthew Pavlich are certainly in with a chance if they play enough good footy throughout the season. Generally speaking though, midfielders poll the most votes. As the adage goes, the game is won and lost in the midfield.
- To find really good odds, take a punt on breakout contenders at the start of the year.
In order to get decent odds on the Brownlow medal, you really need to place your bets before the season starts, or at the very latest, during the first several weeks of the fixture.
Watching the pre-season games can give you a rough idea about a player entering their 5th or 6th year of playing regular footy who has had a role change, or is about to step up into the true 'elite' players of the game.
- Add to your shortlist players who are proven to be honest and durable over the past few seasons.
Another tick for Gary Ablett who usually is quite durable, missing only 1 game on 2006, zero in 2007 and then 4 games in 2008 which could very well have cost him another addition to his trophy cabinet. Obviously you don't want players that play "unsociable" football, with a history of reports and suspensions.
- Find players who have a good recent polling history, especially if the votes and/or team are on the rise.
Some players just don't attract the attention of umpires. Others seem to nearly get a vote for simply stepping onto the field. Research how many votes a player has won, and see if there is a trend upwards, and the probability of getting more votes due to retirements, role changes, more experience and so on.
